Description: | Back Water (Fairy Castle Dean), Oldhamstocks. East Lothian. Conglomerate (Great Conglomerate, Lower Devonian) showing valley and recent erosion features. The erosional features, earth pillars, are the conical columns produced by differential erosion in a region of heavy rainfall. The pillar is usually capped by a protective boulder that shields the underlying softer material from erosion. The diameter of earth pillars are a function of the width of the capping. When a capping is eventually removed, erosion of the pillar can proceed rapidly. |
