Description: Ben Rhinnes from Tomintoul-Dufftown road (near Aultbeg). Banffshire. Topography of the Ben Rhinnes granite showing tors on summit. Surrounded by Lower Dalradian meta-sediments. The Ben Rhinnes granite is a composite pluton composed of an early phase of a reddened foliated K-feldspar granite cut by a small ellipsoidal biotite microgranite. The central part is a grey medium-grained porphyritic, locally xenolithic biotite-granite. These phases are cut by a chemically-distinct leucocratic granite rich in opaque minerals such as sphene and allanite. The granite has been Rubidium-Strontium isotope dated at c. 411 Ma.
