Caption: | Grey Mare's Tail waterfall. Moffatdale. |
Description: | The development of individual waterfalls is related to more massive sandstone beds in the greywacke succession. The erosion of the recession gorge has been facilitated by strong north-westerly trending joints probably related to a late stage of the Caledonian deformation. Following from the moraine-dammed Loch Sheen, the Tail Burn plunges from its hanging valley into Moffatdale. In these lower reaches it exposes one of the most continuous sections through the Gala Group greywackes seen in this area. |
