Description: | Lion Rock, Great Cumbrae. Buteshire. A Tertiary age tholeiitic andesite dyke of cumbraeite type intruded into Upper Devonian sandstones. The rock is a former sea stack, now preserved on the post-glacial raised beach. The dyke forms sheer natural walls with well-developed horizontal cooling joints. It stands out due to its greater resistance to weathering and erosion compared to the softer sedimentary rocks in which it is intruded. The dyke is part of a major swarm of north-west - south-east trending dykes associated with the intense and prolonged Tertiary volcanism that was spread over eleven million years from 63-52 Ma. In particular, they are associated with the dyke swarm emanating from Mull. |
