Description: Near Howgate, east of Rigside. Lanarkshire. The Howgate esker. A sinuous ridge of sand and gravel with a northerly orientation and surrounded by glacial till. Eskers are long sinuous, narrow crested ridges that consist of sands and gravels laid down by glacial meltwater. Eskers are formed at the retreating edge of a glacier or in a subglacial or englacial tunnel.
