Description: | Near Craigie Farm, north-east Fife. Looking north-north-east. Late-glacial cliff, cut in Lower Devonian lavas backing a late-glacial beach flat which dips gently to the east; the beach is underlain by a thin deposit of sand and gravel. The weight of the Devensian ice sheet caused marked isostatic depression, with its removal there was active uplift of the land. Despite this only partial recovery had been made before there was an encroachment of the sea due to a eustatic rise in sea level associated with a return of glacial meltwaters to the ocean. Eventually the rate of uplift exceeded the rise in sea level and the old beach flat and cliffs are now above sea level. |
