Description: The weight of the Devensian ice sheet caused marked isostatic depression, with its removal there was active uplift of the land. Despite this only partial recovery had been made before there was an encroachment of the sea due to a eustatic rise in sea level associated with a return of glacial meltwaters to the ocean. Eventually the rate of uplift exceeded the rise in sea level and the old beach flat and cliffs are now above sea level. Late-glacial cliff, in the distance, cut into Lower Devonian lavas. The late-glacial beach flat, in the foreground, dips gently to the east and is underlain by a thin deposit of beach sands and gravels.
