Description: | Craigleith island, a photograph taken from North Berwick. The island of Craigleith is entirely formed of a laccolith of trachybasalt or fine-grained essexite. Lava flow of olivine-basalt of Markle type in foreground. Although the relationship with the surrounding rocks is not seen, irregular flexures, indicated by prominent joints are well developed all over the island. This suggests a laccolithic form and that the present shape of the island is probably similar to that of the original intrusion. The rock is grey with pink segregations, fine-grained, holocrystalline and non-porphyritic. |
