Description: | Isle of Fidra, a view taken from near Marine Villa. East Lothian. Carboniferous, flat-lying intrusive olivine-basalt sill of the Basanite-Monchiquite Suite, regarded as post Garleton Hills Volcanic Rocks. Vertical columnar jointing cut by near-horizontal joint planes are common on Fidra. The olivine-basalt is of Dalmeny type, tending in places to basanite. Nodules of peridotite and pyroxenite and xenoliths of sedimentary rocks also occur. It is thought the island of Lamb is also part of the same flat-lying sill as that of Fidra, though no contacts or country rocks are visible. |
