Description: Cnoca Breac, South Uist. Outer Hebrides. Flat machair with transgressing storm beach. Storm beaches with cobbles and boulders are widespread particularly on the west coast. The machair is an extensive flat or gently sloping area of blown sand just above sea level that backs sandy beaches. The normal beach-machair system consists of: beach with or without shingle ridge, followed by a narrow zone of dunes, a belt of flat machair, a further sand ridge or low, seaward-facing escarpment behind which the machair slopes away gradually to a line of seepage lochs and marshland.
