Description: | Oblique aerial view of the village of St. Monance, centred on the harbour and showing the St. Monance syncline in the Lower Limestone Group, Lower Carboniferous. The section of the Lower Limestone Group is regarded as the best exposed on the coast. The sequence consists of sedimentary cycles of a type familiar in other parts of the Midland Valley. The typical cycle consists of: mudstone with marine fossils; limestone; mudstone with marine fossils; alternations of sandstone, siltstone and mudstone; sandstone; seatearth; coal. One or more members may be missing in any given cycle. |
