The section of the Lower Limestone Group is regarded as the best exposed on the coast. The sequence consists of sedimentary cycles of a type familiar in other parts of the Midland Valley. The typical cycle consists of: mudstone with marine fossils; limestone; mudstone with marine fossils; alternations of sandstone, siltstone and mudstone; sandstone; seatearth; coal. One or more members may be missing in any given cycle. |
