| Description: | Fairy Castle at junction of Bladdering Cleuch and Back Water. East Lothian. Vertical dolerite dyke intruded into Lower Old Red Sandstone (Lower Devonian) conglomerate. The dyke, one of a swarm of olivine-basalt or olivine-dolerite dykes that cuts the Lower Devonian Great Conglomerate is thought to be Middle Devonian or even Carboniferous age. The greywacke clasts are cut sharply across, and the baking of the immediately adjacent conglomerate often forms clean-sided trenches resulting from the weathering of the less resistant dyke rock. The dykes in the swarm are generally less than 1 m. thick, but range up to 5 m. Most are vertical and all are characterized by sharp, clean junctions with the country rock. The trend of these dykes varies in an arc from 270 to 325 degrees with a dominant trend of 300-305 degrees. |
