Description: | Swillington Brickworks, Leeds. View north-north-east. General section from the Thornhill Rock to above the Lidget Coal at Swillington Brickworks. The prominent sandstone in the foreground is the Thornhill Rock. Two prominent sandstones occur higher up the sequence separated by mudstones. An unnamed coal is at the level of the first terrace about halfway up. It is succeeded by grey mudstones with some ironstone bands near the base of the second terrace which is marked by a soft pale grey seatearth clay and then by lidget coal (not seen in this view). Above are mudstones and black shales, then orange-brown siltstones, dark mudstones and finally laminated siltsones and mudstones overlain by orange-brown clay at the top. |
