Description: Looking south from the Brenish Road end, west Lewis. Outer Hebrides. 'Lazy beds' in the foreground on Lewisian gneiss. Mealasta Island and Scarp (island) in the background are both part of the Uig Hills-Harris granite complex. The 'lazy beds', often on sandy areas and also found here and there among the rocks provide almost the only cultivable land. The sloped and curved (for drainage purposes) narrow strips are formed by heaping into ridges whatever good soil was available. Many lazy beds are very ancient, having been cultivated over many generations. The deep drainage channels between are often filled with Purple Marsh Orchids or Yellow Rattle.
