Description: Looking south-west across Loch Roisnavat to Ben Barvas. Outer Hebrides. Typical Lewisian gneiss topography of Central Lewis. A monotonous peat-covered interior devoid of rock outcrops. It has been shown to overlie both glacial till and bedrock and thicknesses of two metres or more are common. It is thought that peat growth may have started early on the islands c. 8800 BP, but it probably became general only later, c. 4000 BP as on the Scottish mainland.
