Description: | Copper Hill Quarry, Ancaster. Upper Lincolnshire Limestone, Copper Hill Quarry. Part of the north-north-west face of the quarry c. 150 m. to the south-west (i.e. off-picture to the left) of the foregoing picture. The topmost unit of coarse-grained peloidal, partly shelly oolite grainstone (bed 26 of N.G. Berridge=Clipsham member=Ancaster Rag) shows a consistent northward 20 - 30 degrees cross-bedded dip.Beneath it, 2.4 m. of imbricate cross-bedded less coarse-grained oolite grainstone is defined as Bed 25. About 2 m. of underlying similar strata, here split into two posts, is defined as Bed 24. Together Beds 24 and 25 comprise the 'Ancaster Freestone' or 'Sleaford Member' of Ashton. Note the crenulate nature of the underlying unconformity on thin-bedded Lower Lincolnshire Limestone (mostly calcisiltite here), particularly near the head of the hammer held by the observer. |
