| Description: | Woodend, Carstairs. Lanarkshire. Esker system. Looking north along the Carstairs esker system which comprises here two sub-parallel ridges separated by an area of low ground. The western margin of the eskers is marked by a steep slope down to the flat peat-covered ground of Ryeflat Moss. Individual ridges are discontinuous but the system as a whole extends over about 5 km. Eskers are long sinuous, narrow crested ridges that consist of sands and gravels laid down by glacial meltwater. Eskers are formed at the retreating edge of a glacier or in a subglacial or englacial tunnel. |
