Description: | Woodend, Carstairs. Lanarkshire. Esker system. Looking north along the Carstairs esker system which comprises a group of steep-sided ridges extending over about 5 km. In the north these abut the flat peat-covered area forming Carnwath Moss (middle distance). The ridges merge to the north into a more moundy topography probably representing outwash deposits of the sub-ice streams. Eskers are long sinuous, narrow crested ridges that consist of sands and gravels laid down by glacial meltwater. Eskers formed at the retreating edge of a glacier or in a subglacial or englacial tunnel. |
