| Description: | Oblique aerial view from above the north coast of Ardnamurchan. Highland Region. General view of Eigg and Rum, both part of the same Tertiary igneous province of which the Ardnamurchan peninsula is part. Eigg, the low island in the distance is composed of basaltic plateau lavas of the early phase of the development of the Tertiary province. Rum (and Ardnamurchan) are both plutonic igneous central complexes made up of suites of arcuate intrusions that define more than one centre. The thicker plateau lavas are associated with the Mesozoic basins while the central igneous complexes occur on pre-Mesozoic and Precambrian rocks and are usually associated with major faulting. The Tertiary volcanism overall, is associated with areas of thinning of the earth's crust. |
