Caption: Oblique aerial view of Eigg looking north. Highland Region.
Description: The landslipped area is regarded as spectacular, the deposits are of diverse origin and there is probably a continuous transition from glaciogenic material to debris formed by the rotational slip. The Tertiary igneous centre of Skye can be seen in the background. It is thought that the landslips took place because the stability of the plateau had been disturbed by ice action during the main Late Devensian glaciation. Flat-lying Tertiary plateau basaltic lavas form most of the island of Eigg except for the green grassy area in the background which slopes down to the Bay of Laig. This is formed of Jurassic strata partly covered by landslipped material.
