South of Leighton Buzzard, the 'Red Sands' at the top of the Woburn Sands exhibit strong cross-bedding typical of sand-wave environments. The medium to coarse-grained sands contain a proportion of dark brown limonite grains and some clay, which are concentrated on some layers giving a 'striped' effect, (south face).
