Description: | Stone Lane Quarry, Joseph Arnold and Sons Ltd., Heath and Reach, near Leighton Buzzard. General view of south face of quarry in Woburn Sands (Lower Cretaceous). At the top of the face up to 4 m. of the Lower Cretaceous 'Silver Sands' may be seen. They are separated from the underlying 'Brown Sands' by a 0.5 m. band of coarse, pebbly, clayey ferruginous sand, which forms a ledge and appears to indicate the true dip locally. The 'Brown Sands' up to 10 m. thick show gentle cross-bedding with ferruginous trace fossils and layers. The 'Brown Sands' are screened in the pit and sold as building sand. The 'Silver Sands' are processed for industrial use. Photo by permission of the Company. |
