Description: | Mundays Hill Quarry, George Garside (Sand) Ltd. (E.C.C.), Heath and Reach, near Leighton Buzzard. Large-scale cross-bedding in 'Silver Sands', Woburn Sands (Lower Cretaceous). Several interesting sets of large-scale cross-beds can be detected in the face. They are characteristic of sand-wave environments in shallow seas. (See also A14476.) The distant face is in bluish grey Gault Clay, which is removed as overburden before the sands can be excavated. The iron-staining affecting the 'Silver Sands' in this part of the quarry reduces their value for industrial uses. Height of the face up to 4 m. Photo by permission of the Company. |
