Description: Chamberlains Barn Quarry, Joseph Arnold and Sons Ltd., Leighton Buzzard. Erosional contact of 'Red Sands' and 'Silver Sands' sivisions of the Woburn Sands (Lower Cretaceous). Gault overburden may be seen above the 5 to 6 m. working face. The upper 3 to 4 m. of the face comprises strongly cross-bedded, medium to coarse-grained sands, characterized by the presence of dark limonite grains and small pebbles. The lower 2 m. of the face (below the heads of the figures) comprises purer sands without limonite assigned to the 'Silver Sands'. The erosional contact is marked by a dark pebbly layer. The sands from this quarry are mainly used for the manufacture of concrete roofing tiles. Photo by permission of the Company.
