Description: Erosional contact of 'Red Sands' and 'Silver Sands' divisions of the Woburn Sands (Lower Cretaceous) at Chamberlains Barn Quarry, Joseph Arnold and Sons Ltd., Leighton Buzzard. The upper 2 to 3 m. of the face comprises dark, medium to coarse-grained sands with dark limonite, small pebbles and some clay and are assigned to the 'Red Sands'. The basal erosion surface is marked by a thin ferruginous pebbly lag deposit. The lower 2 to 3 m. comprises purer medium-grained sands with prominent vertical trace fossils, assigned to the 'Silver Sands'. The quarry, to the south-west of Shenley Hill has been worked for many years and has been extensively backfilled with Gault overburden material. The Gault overburden in the current workings on the east is up to 11 m. thick. The output of this quarry goes almost entirely to the adjacent concrete tile works.
