Description: | Granite coastal scenery from the cliff path near Zawn Wells, 650 m. at 150 degrees from Lands End Hotel. The steep cliffs of megacrystic coarse-grained biotite-granite and the arched rock of Enys Dodman are capped with Head. The armed Knight and Longships with its lighthouse are in the background. Several sets of vertical joints and gently inclined to sub-horizontal joints are clearly visible. The arch and chasm adjacent to Enys Dockman are aligned along a prominent north-west to south-east joint/fault trend. The broad reniform shape of the Land's End granite determines the general shape of the Penwith peninsula bounded by steep cliffs, commonly 50 to 90 metres high. The development of three sets of joints in the granite has enabled it to part into cuboid blocks from which are sculpted the castellated cliffs of Land's End. |
