| Description: | This 16th century house the home at one time, of Shakespeare's mother is built principally of local pale grey limestone from the Lower Jurassic Lias Group. Mary Arden inherited the house in 1556. The house is close timbered with oak from the forest of Arden and stone from the local quarry. Mary Arden's House is constructed from locally quarried Blue Lias limestone. These limestones need little or no dressing as they occur in thin beds, 15-20 cms. in thickness, which readily break into regularly shaped and manageable block sizes. The thick limestone development that marks the base of the Lower Jurassic, Lias Group succession, is known as the Blue Lias Formation. The limestones are an important source of building stone and lime for lime mortar, along much of their outcrop which extends from Dorset to the Yorkshire coast. |
