The cathedral is sited on a small, level, free draining plateau formed by the Woburn Sands, reportedly on the site of a minster founded in 673 A.D. by Etheldreda, daughter of a king of the East Angles. The bulk of the cathedral, including the west front, is composed of oolitic limestone from the Middle Jurassic Lincolnshire Limestone of the Stamford area and was transported to Ely by barge through the Fenland waterways. |
