Description: Coates Quarry, Coates, 2 km. SW of Fittleworth Church. 5th Terrace deposits overlying Folkestone Beds. The terrace deposits consist in descending sequence of: flinty sand, 1 m.; mottled orange-grey sandy clay passing down into grey clay, 0.8 m.; cross-bedded sand and poorly sorted, unrounded flint gravel, 0.1-1.5 m. The Folkestone Beds comprise fine, medium- and coarse-grained, scoop-bedded soft sandstone with thin interbeds of greyish pink clay.
