| Description: | Basal breccia or conglomerate of Upper Old Red Sandstone dipping at a low angle to left (north), resting on vertical shaly siltstone and thin greywacke of Silurian (Llandovery) age. The breccia consists of angular fragments of greywacke in a red, sandy matrix. Silurian greywackes in immediate foreground. Distant cliffs of Silurian greywackes between Fast Castle and St. Abb's Head. The impressive display of sedimentary and tectonic processes shown by the nature of the unconformity has made Siccar Point a place of international geological pilgrimage due to the outstanding historical associations, stemming from a visit paid by James Hutton in 1788. Unconformity between Upper Old Red Sandstone and the underlying Silurian (Llandovery) age rocks. Hutton's classic world-famous unconformity. He was the first geologist to grasp the true significance of such a structure. |
