| Description: | Basal breccia or conglomerate of Upper Old Red Sandstone dipping at a low angle to left (north), resting on vertical shaly siltstone and thin greywacke of Silurian (Llandovery) age. The breccia consists of angular fragments of greywacke in a red, sandy matrix. Siccar Point has become a place of international geological pilgrimage due to the outstanding historical associations, stemming from a visit paid by James Hutton in 1788, accompanied by Sir James Hall and Professor John Playfair. Unconformity between Upper Old Red Sandstone and the underlying Silurian (Llandovery) age rocks. Hutton's classic world-famous unconformity. He was the first geologist to grasp the true significance of such a structure. |
