Caption: Drift deposits banked against old sea cliff, Black Rock, Brighton, East Sussex.
Description: Raised beach deposits of the Brighton raised beach consisting of flint gravel with large chalk boulders may be seen above the retaining wall (left). They are banked against the Upper Chalk of the old sea cliff near the centre of the picture (partly concealed by debris). Crudely-bedded chalk scree deposits overlie the raised beach and are also banked against the old cliff. Well-developed cryoturbation lobes may be seen in a layer at the top of the cliff, cutting across both the scree deposits and the solid chalk. Remnants of raised sea-beaches have been recorded at 100 feet and 15 feet O.D. on the Sussex coast. The Lower or 15 foot beach rests on a platform of Chalk and Eocene beds. This platform rises to about 30 feet where it is banked against a old sea cliff only seen at Black Rock, Brighton where is is quite degraded. The beach consists of flint pebbles and marine sands beneath a cover of later drift.
