Description: | Oblique aerial view of Eyemouth from the north. Berwickshire. The headland, Eyemouth Fort, is made up largely of Upper Old Red Sandstone conglomerate dipping at a low angle to the north-east, resting unconformably on Lower Old Red Sandstone lavas. Most of the rock seen in the photograph is conglomerate. Most of Eyemouth is built on a series of fluvioglacial gravel terraces in places over 30 m. above sea level. The Upper Old Red Sandstone is of Upper Devonian to Carboniferous age. It formed as a fluvial piedmont to the older Silurian, Lower Devonian on which it sits unconformably. |
