Description: Shoreham Cement Works. Shoreham Cement Works. Portland cement is manufactured from chalk quarried from the Upper and Middle Chalk in the extensive pits behind the works. The other main ingredient, clay, is obtained from the Gault in pits at Small Dole approximately 6 km. to the north. The clay is pumped as a slurry through a pipeline from Small Dole to the Shoreham Works. (See also photos A13364 - A13367.)
