| Description: | Oblique aerial view at Scoughall, Whitekirk. East Lothian. Looking west. The Pilmour volcano is located in the foreground while in the distance the North Berwick Law conical volcanic plug composed of a phonolitic trachyte can be seen. Located in the south part of Scoughall Rocks, the vent is ill-defined with margins obscured by beach deposits. The northern part contains red tuff with no bedding and few fragments. The southern part consists of red and brown fine- to coarse-grained tuffs and is notable for blocks of sandstone up to 100 m. long. The Pilmour volcano is part of a series of cryptovolcanic necks and associated intrusions and volcanic breccias that is seen along this coast from Dunbar. They are thought to be associated with the Garleton Hills Volcanic Rocks volcanic episode. |
