Description: Oblique aerial view of Skid Hill Quarry, Garleton Hills. East Lothian. Looking north. Trachyte lavas of the Carboniferous (Calciferous Sandstone Measures) Garleton Hills Volcanic Rocks. The lavas of Skid Hill represent a transition to the porphyritic quartz-trachytes with a reduced amount of plagioclase from the quartz-banakites that are characterized by the presence of plagioclase phenocrysts. The trachytic magmas formed through fractionation of the basic magmas i.e. the separation of a cooling magma into parts by the successive crystallization of different minerals at progressively lower temperatures.
