| Description: | The junction between Thanet Beds (now Thanet Sand Formation) and Upper Chalk at the Old chalk-pit (now Oil Depot) at Ballingdon, Sudbury. The photograph shows in detail part of the irregular junction between Upper Chalk and the silty fine-grained sands of the Thanet Beds. The irregular junction is due to channeling prior to deposition of the Thanet Sand, combined with later solution of the Chalk. The upper part of the Chalk is very soft. The basal few centimetres of the Thanet Beds consists of pockets of brownish clayey fine-grained sands succeeded by a pebble bed (referred to as the Bullhead Bed). The flints comprising this bed are commonly nodular or well-rounded with an outer coating of glauconite. This mineral is also present in the fine-grained sands above, giving the green colour to the sediment. The Thanet Sand Formation is the oldest Palaeogene (Tertiary) formation. The principal outcrops are in south-east London and North Kent. At the end of the Cretaceous there was a drastic change from the Chalk to shallow marine, coastal and fluviatile sediments. The change was accompanied by a mass extinction and a whole new rich and varied fossil fauna and major tectonic movements. |
