Description: Old chalk-pit (now Oil Depot) at Ballingdon, Sudbury. Junction between Thanet Beds and Upper Chalk. Buff to pink silty fine sands rests on white chalk. The chalk is deeply weathered and is very soft to the base of the pit. The junction is irregular due to collapse within the chalk at depth; in places the colour banding (probably indicating bedding) within the Thanet Beds broadly mirrors the chalk surface. The basal 0.5 m. of Thanet Beds has a dark green colour due to the presence of glauconite.
