Description: Dating from the 12th century Warwick Castle is built almost entirely of Triassic Bromsgrove Sandstone quarried close to the site. Like many other local stones, however, the sandstone is no longer quarried and dealing with conservation problems is a major issue not only for this castle but for many other historic properties. The pale coloured sandstones used in the construction of Warwick Castle come from the local Bromsgrove Sandstone Formation which can be seen in the riverside cliffs on which the castle sits. Evidence of old quarries is found in the grounds surrounding the castle. The pale greenish-grey, fine-grained sandstones of the Bromsgrove Sandstone Formation were an important source of building stone in the West Midlands area. Numerous small quarries are known to have existed which supplied stone for houses, churches and bridges.
