| Description: | Isle of Rum, Askival, Hallival. Inverness-shire. Layered peridotitic and gabbroic igneous rocks of the Rum Central Complex of Tertiary age give rise to a strongly terraced topography due to contrasting weathering. Askival is part of the Eastern Layered Intrusion, it is a classic area of igneous layering. It consists of a succession of thick layers of bytownite-troctolite and feldspathic peridotite. The layered rocks are divided into 16 major units, each grades upwards from olivine-rich to feldspar-rich rocks. The cause of the layering is still being debated, the classical view is of crystal settling in the semi-molten mush of magma. Recent views advocate a mechanism involving in situ crystallization and double-diffusive convection. |
