| Description: | Oblique aerial view of the east coast of Iona looking towards the south end of the island. Argyll and Bute. Iona Abbey is seen to the right and the settlement of Baile Mor is in the centre, both situated on a well-developed raised beach. Lewisian gneiss outcrops behind the abbey with the Torridonian 'flatlands' to the east of the abbey. The higher ground to the top of the photograph is all Lewisian gneiss, it is where the well-known pure white with green marbling Iona Marble is found. The small islands of Eilean Mor and Eilean Carrach are composed of granite belonging to the Ross of Mull Granite. The emplacement of the Ross of Mull Granite has caused contact metamorphism in the adjacent rocks on Iona. |
