Description: Markham Colliery, Sirhowy Valley. Looking NNE. Markham Colliery. Situated near the southern edge of the Abergavenny Sheet, high in Upper Coal (Pennant) Measures, Markham Pit is the deepest in the area (1845 feet). It commences in Hughes Beds, and an old Pennant Sandstone quarry, about 30 m. high, can be seen behind the pit-head complex.
