The photograph illustrates the components of the Ben Nevis Complex, a classic example of cauldron subsidence. The foreground shows a cliff of lavas with a ridge of Inner Granite running around behind it, immediately behind this is a ridge of Outer Granite which is intruded by the inner facies, and then behind again are the country rocks of Dalradian schists and quartzites which have been intruded by the granite complex. The sequence of events in the formation of the Ben Nevis Complex are 1. Subsidence of a subterranean block into a magma chamber followed by the Outer Granite filling the void. 2. A period of dyke injection followed by further subsidence admitting the Inner Granite. 3. A further subsidence of the Dalradian schists overlain by the Lower Old Red Sandstone lavas. |
