Caption: Oblique aerial view looking south across summit of Ben Nevis shows Old Red Sandstone lavas. Inverness-shire.
Description: The view shows Old Red Sandstone lavas with very strong penetrative jointing, the crags immediately behind the ridge are of the enclosing Inner Granite of the Ben Nevis Complex. The sequence of events in the formation of the Ben Nevis Complex are 1. Subsidence of a subterranean block into a magma chamber followed by the Outer Granite filling the void. 2. A period of dyke injection followed by further subsidence admitting the Inner Granite. 3. A further subsidence of the Dalradian schists overlain by the Lower Old Red Sandstone lavas. The lavas form the central part of the Ben Nevis Complex (along with the Dalradian metasedimentary rocks), the last part that underwent cauldron subsidence.
