Description: Oblique aerial view of Ben Nevis. Inverness-shire. The cauldron subsidence of the Ben Nevis Complex. Looking down the Allt a' Mhuilinn. Cliff face of Old Red Sandstone lavas with enclosing ring dyke of the Inner Granite, the contact runs along the stream and round behind the cliff. The lavas are chiefly hornblende-andesites with a fair proportion of agglomerate. In general the contact of the Inner Granite shows chilling, the granite rapidly passes into rhyolite (the fine-grained equivalent of granite). It has a vertical streaky flow structure. This is attributed to subsidence of the central block of volcanic rocks in the liquid granitic magma.
