| Description: | The cliff face consists of Old Red Sandstone lavas with the contact of the enclosing Inner Granite running up the stream and round behind the left end of the cliff. The foreground is all granite. The contact of the granite shows chilling, this is attributed to subsidence of the central block of volcanic rocks in the liquid granitic magma. There are three parts to the Ben Nevis Complex, the Outer Granite, steeply-bounded against the contact-altered schists, a continuous inner ring of the Inner Granite older than the Outer Granite, and the central core consisting of 2000 ft. of Lower Old Red Sandstone volcanic rocks overlying Dalradian metasedimentary rocks. The view illustrates the cauldron subsidence structure of the Ben Nevis Complex, a series of concentric intrusions with a central block of Dalradian metasedimentary rocks and Lower Old Red Sandstone lavas faulted down. |
