Description: Clay Colliery Opencast Site, Telford. Looking NE. Old coal mine workings. Exposure in coal and fireclay opencast site shows Best Coal and Randle Coal overlying the mined horizon of the Clod Coal. Now backfilled with gob (a loose fill of waste coal, shale and clay). Method of mining this system was by longwalling, effecting total extraction. Note pit props used in mining.
