Description: | Cairns of Clava. Inverness-shire. Neolithic chambered cairns constructed of blocks of Old Red Sandstone pebbly grit, Moine psammite and granite-gneiss. A terrace lying 2 to 3 metres above the flood plain of the River Nairn underlies the archaeological site at Clava where the stones of the chambered cairns and other piles of boulders derive mainly from the boulder gravel in the terrace; a borehole drilled immediately downstream proved 7.9 metres of coarse gravel on the bedrock. |
