Caption: | Celestite processing plant. Hall End, Wickwar, Gloucestershire. |
Description: | The mineral is taken by lorry from the pit to the processing plant at Hall End near Wickwar. The celestite is first reduced to less than 1.5 in. (38 mm.) by means of a jaw crusher (on left of photograph) then washed and sized by counter flow trommel screens (centre and right of photograph) producing roughly 0.75 in. to 3/16 in. (-19 mm. + 4.75 mm.) gravel. The finer material is dewatered and the oversize is recirculated to the crusher. Celestite is the principal ore of strontium and its salts. It is used in the manufacture of rubber, paint and electrical batteries. It is used in the nuclear industries and in the production of fireworks and flares, giving a crimson flame. Celestite is an orthorhombic mineral, colourless, milky white, pale blue or yellowish in colour and forming radiating, massive or granular aggregates. It is a dense mineral with a specific gravity of 3.96. It is frequently sought by mineral collectors. |
