| Description: | The Rock and Spindle sea stack, part of the Kinkell Ness neck, 3 km. east of St. Andrews. Fifeshire. The circular 'Spindle' is formed of xenolithic, columnar basanite and the stack behind it (the 'Rock') is formed of basanitic breccia. The basanite sea stack is situated in the softer tuffs of the late Carboniferous or early Permian Kinkell Ness volcanic vent, one of many in the area. Similar clusters of vents occur throughout the Midland Valley of Scotland. |
